Yoga With Music: An Alternative Medicine

Music and yoga are both considered as parts of alternative medicine. Individually, the two possess extraordinary healing powers. It stands to reason then, that combining music and yoga together can create limitless possibilities of healing, transformation and peace.

The top 5 ways music can enhance your practice:

1. Mood: Music has an ability to take us from one emotional state to the next. If I’m having a rough day, and I hear an uplifting song, it most certainly helps to make us feel better.

2. Meditation: Contrary to popular belief, mediation is not about silence. No matter where you are in meditation, there will always be sounds going on around. The stillness we refer to in meditation does not have to be about the physical body. It’s more about the mental body & finding stillness in the mind.

3. Memory: Music has an intrinsic ability to stimulate memory for me. For some, they may see this as a negative aspect. I have a different outlook on memory. I believe that memories, whether good or bad, are an opportunity to do a self-evaluation. When I hear a song that reminds me of something or someone, I say to myself, “bless these feelings that are coming up for they are helping me heal.”

4. Momentum: The beat of the music stimulates my senses and pushes me through the challenging parts of the practice. As the intensity builds, the music becomes my inspiration.

5. Movement: It becomes a dance. The music transcends me to a place of grace and ease. Even if the pose feels challenging in the moment, I can make it feel effortless with how I move. Transitioning from one pose to the next feels really good when accompanied by a beautiful melody.

Music is in all of our lives, all the time. Restaurants know what music to play to hurry you out, while retail stores understand what makes you linger and browse. These marketing techniques are predominantly accomplished at the subconscious level. Whether or not you’re even ‘hearing’ the music, it’s still affecting your neurochemistry.
